Here is a very simple method to make a pothanger. I haven't seen this one in any books but I have used it many times. It is easy to erect and the idea is simple.
1. Find one approx. metre long stick that's about 2cm in diameter and 3 naturally Y shaped sticks of about 30cm length and thumb thickness.
2. Carve the ends of two of the Y forked sticks to a point and stick them into the ground crossing each other at an angle like an X so they are partially aligned.
3. Carve a notch in the end of the longer pole and rest it over the two forked sticks so it extends above the flame of the fire.
4. Now using the last Y stick sharpen the two \/ bits running of the end to a point and push it over the end of the metre long stick thats touching the ground to act as a peg to prevent the pole flying up into the air when you hang the pot onto it.
Now you can put the bail arm of the pot into the notch and as long as you've place it correctly it will be suspended above the fire! Move the 2 supporting forked sticks closer together or further apart to move the cooking pot higher or lower into the flames depending on how much heat you require.
