Default Hardtack

Knocked up a 3" x 3" x 1/2" biscuit cutter yesterday as today, with the crappy weather and 2 mildly sick kids I thought We'd bake up a batch of hardtack/ships biscuits to use as portable sources of flour (as opposed to actally try eating them straight!)

Now does any one have recipes to make more palatable, if not long lasting, versions so the lads have something to scoff at the end of it all.

First batch! Only 1 a bit burned due to my using the tiny oven in the Baby Belling in the shed rather than a big real oven. Touk about a hour at 250 .

Great ideas chaps.

Good link too Andy. I like the sound of that Swedish Hardtack. May have to give that a whirl. You could add fennel seeds to the Swedish one, honey and fennel are a great combo.

Carraway seeds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds might add something to the texture and flavour of your hardtack Tom.

I'd also try experimenting with dried fruits such as cranberries or even mixed fruit. With a pinch of mixed spice (NOT all spice) they could taste okay.

It was quite common in medieval times to use these kinda things in savory grub....but I think you'd have to train your pallet before mixing it into you Bully Beef!

I believe the holes are there to make them come out side ways....

Cheers for the links et all.

After the first batch came out the kids lost interest and started playing RISK.

We are off to the Historic Dockyards at Portsmouth on Sunday, I'll take some down for them to gnaw on as we go around the Victory. They probably have Childline on speed dial already...
