Pinzgauer - Suitable Expedition Camper Conversion?
Like to hear from anyone who has some experience with the Pinzgauer or anything else suitable for a Expeditionary Camper conversion. I would like at some point to undertake a camper conversion of ( I think ) a Pinzgauer 6x6 or Bedford 4 Tonner to be able to do some expedition type things and generally have a nice little all terrain camper vechicle. So any views positive or negative? Or are there any other vechicles that would make good candidates ( reasonable price ) for expedition candidates. I am trying to thing in terms of;- availability of parts and spares. ( the 101FC is getting really old now ) Physical ability Price Size ( I could ship a Pinz in a Shipping container for that 3 year Oz Coast trip..Dreaming! ) Fuel Consumption Age Reliabilty So any takers?? |

Richard , What do you think of the Volvo c303 /306? Just been checking them out , seem to be a lot cheaper then the Pinz? And Bigger. Not always a good thing but The Pinz seems to be a little narrow ?

It's something I had dreamed about doing with a 716 but the wife wasn't so keen :(
Of all the vehicles I was looking at, the 716, Tatra 813 and Unimog. In terms of parts etc. the unimog seems to be miles ahead. I guess it would be a bit cheaper to run than the 716 and a lot cheaper to run than the 813 but not half as much fun. I did once find a swiss company that was selling ex-military 716s that looked in excellent condition with very low km's. Can't find it again now though.

Hello Teedee
If you want to see one of the best pinzgauer camper setups have a look on milweb. Having seen both the Unimog and the Pinz as campers I would go for the Unimog, spares are cheeper and you can find part all over the world. The Unimog also has a neat mounting system so you can change the bodys also you can add and find PTO kit to beef up your options. The best place to see your options is the German 4x4 show which is well worth a trip. I hope you find one Pinz PS If you want a taste of what you can get with a little! cash have a look at the Unicat site (THE MANN WITH THE SMART CAR IS NICE). Pinzgauer -Yes, Unicat are nice , just need the lottery win to fund that sort of stuff!!!
have also been thinking about doing some biz with our comrade bros. Been looking at these things , if they can survive the road of bones they can't be all that bad can they?? And they look seriously bad-ass to boot... http://www.russiantruck.co.uk/details.php?id=103 |

If you can't get there in a pinz or an unimog, you won't get there at all.
Of those 2, i'd go unimog, for reasons allready mentioned, like parts and switchbed on the frame. If you can get your hands on the medivac unimog, you will allready have an insulated and heated compartment suitable for offroading The pinzgauer with the aircooled engine on the other hand is near to indestructible. ANd the centerframe on it is superb. They too can be fitted with a switchbed, in fact some of them allready are. The pinz is very stable in terrain, but in general when offroading in it, it has only one setting: Kangaroo! It'll bounce like nothing else. Great big fun ![]() Prices i know next to nothing about. I just drive

Pinz are great wagons, loads of room and go anywhere, easy to drive and great for off roading better than the LR Wolf, Bedford 4 toner is a larger beast, but even though a lot more room ( can sleep 4 people with proper beds and some brains) still a bit big to take to most woods and a lot slower too
I have driven both but I would go for a pinz or Unimog over the bedford unless you want to make a "luxury" style camper then the bedford has the room, out of choice all depends on how deep your pockets are. |
