Default Bernie's knife workshop pics

Just before Christmas I popped down to Bernies to see how he makes knives and he made one up to the shape I like for carving. Here are photos of most of the process.

Cutting the rough shape from 3mm O1 stock, or is it working on a new roll up lighting technique.

I wanted as near as possible to copy the stick tang knife that I have reprofiled to my liking.

Refining shape on the radiusmaster

Grinding the bevels on the radiusmaster

Drilling holes for the pins

Heat treat, up to bright cherry then drop it in oil

gives us about 63 rockwell, hard but brittle.

so it went into the oven at 220 for half an hour to bring us back to a more useable 58-59 rockwell.

Cleaned up with emery by hand and the back rounded slightly to make thumb push strokes easier.

Finishing touches on a stick tang, Bernie puts a micro secondary bevel on with the Shrade sharpening steel.

We made a full tang version and a stick tang. Here are two stick tangs, 3mm for me and 2mm for fish.

Always interesting to see how craftsmen work. These are a bunch of knives Bernie was about to send out, last delivery before Christmas.

Thumbs up Re: Bernie's knife workshop pics

Fascinating to see Bernie at his craft!
I imagine he makes it look easy, in the same way that you make spoon carving look like a doddle too
I really do want one of those for my carving exploits but it will have to wait I'm afraid ce'st La Vie!
nice one Robin
cheers
Steve

I bet some of the knife making things he does would make excellent youtube vids.

Smart one Bernie and Robin

That's it? No fancy jig? Crikey, to think he makes that many knives on an ordinary platen guide.

Well done.
