I would reccommend a Japanese combination 1000/6000 waterstone for sharpening beginners. This was the first stone I used for sharpening and it was a real joy and easy affair

Can anyone recommend the DC4 combination diamond/ceramic whetstone?
It consists of a fine diamond stone (25 micron) and a ceramic stone, made of synthetic sapphire. Although they get worn, it is said it will still keep it's flat shape. Also you do not need to lubricate these stones, but just clean them with warm water and liquid soap once in a while. They are available from The Trading Post http://www.tregor.co.uk/dc4.html and seem cheaper than a Japanese combination stone. If anyone could give me a little advice it may save me some money.. |

Well I've heard that it takes off a fair bit of metal when used and I think a few people have had theirs break into pieces when they dropped them, because of its size I'd probably be dropping it all the time! If you do get one let me know what you think of it..
