I've been also thinking to rehandle one of my knives like this. Could it be that antler is more "waterproof" than wood? i have absolutely no expirience with any antler

I don't think its any better than wood aslong as the wood is oiled and sealed properly.
Antler may shrink or expand a little over time, best put a linner in.
Main problem will be getting decent antler to do it, I don't rate reindeer antler its to porous.
