Hi Tank,
I had thought about doing this for a while - my eldest son( now at Uni ) has done them for years - but I have never taken the plunge before now. So I stole one of his frost hook knives out of his kit and had a go! I dug out a small piece of ash from my wood store that looked the right sort of shape and then roughed out an outline with my mini hatchet, I then switched to my pocket knife to get the finer work done and then onto the hook knife. I have to say it worked really well and even though it was the first time I have used one it seemed to work out ok. I finished the Knife with some olive oil and then some beeswax. The first photo is of the spoon the 2nd and 3rd of the spoon with the kit I used to make it. I am just in the process of locating some larger pieces for a bowl and a Kuska - its adictive this carving. My sons hook knife is now firmly in my grab bag and will be with me to keep my hands busy whilst brewing up or round a fire. Cheers Jon |

Hi mate,
Excellent carving work there. Better than my first attempt too. Is funny when you see thoses pictures of perfect spoons with the title "first attempt" when it is probably the 101st attempt. People seeking apprval probaly and lying to get it. Keep up the good work mate. It will be interesting to see how the spoon evolves over time and gets better. Gives some hope to the rest of us. Cheers Treeboy

My advise is this: be as patient as you can bring yourself to be. Each one of these rough-ins can be transformed into a nice piece of craftwork. Read lots of spoonmaking postings on this site and think about them.
But most important get yourself a crook knife/spoon knife before starting to hollow the bowl. It's not worth trying without one. How to think about what a spoon is? . . . It's a bowl with a handle on it. The rest is design, and that's a very personal concept. Have at it, you'll love what you've done. . . and the possibilities of what you can! -- cheers and welcome to bushcrafting |

That looks lovely, ex medieval forest converted to 18th century landscape park and finally 1960's forestry, layers over layers.
See how similar it is to Hatfield Forest where I used to work, this had the same history except it escaped the 1960s "improvements" to both grassland and woodland.
