Default question about trapping

what do you think the best type of trap is for raccoons/opossums?

i recently tried a snare made of paracord. it was tied to a rock that, when triggered would drop and set the snare.

woke up, trap was triggered, but the animal had escaped.

also tried another in which the bait stick triggered a crossbow aimed at bait stick. woke up, arrow had missed a bit high. thinking more about that trap, i suspect that the raccoon/oppossum would have run off, mortally wounded, but not been found if my aim had been better.

would like advice on best simple traps for nocturnal critters.

thanks..

may i ask..

what's a decent percentage for traps set/tripped/caught?

for instance...

if i set 10 traps, would it be normal to have 50% of them tripped and 25% of them catch a critter?

apologizing for the newbieness of my questions in advance....

probably 10 -15%, but no one over here has ever manage to trap a racoon or a possum.

If its a vermin/urban problem id invest in a drop front wire cage trap they wont get out of that. then get someone with a gun to dispatch them, snares made of cord need checking very regularly as animals will chew through them, your better off with a heavy locking wire snare like our fox snares in the UK, Racoons and possums are savage once snared so make sure you go armed with something man enough to dispatch them as if there still alive when you get there you will have a problem on your hands..

There is a fella in Scotland who caught a Racoon in a fox snare, it was an escapee from an animal park.
