How Do All
Now then these hear water filters. Are they any good. I have never used one. How clean do they make the water or shall i just not bother.
Cheers
Which ones are you talking about buddy theres quite a range from Pre-mac to the old milbank bag. A milbank bag to filter any particulate contamination (turbidity) out combined with a good boiling does everything apart from Chemical contaminates, boiling in this case intensifys the chemical, a bit like reducing a sauce when cooking the water evaporates leaving any chemical nasties. Milbank bags are about 20 quid and last for ages when they get full o ****e you just wash them out.
I have an MSR waterworks II filter & a millbank bag. I have used them both quite a bit. The MSR is durable, dependable & has a real good reputation. But, it is a complex piece of kit, with lots of tiny moving parts (it's worth getting a comprehensive spares & repairs kit for it). This is one of those bits of kit everyone should have somewhere close to hand. Let’s face it what is the one thing all folks need & lots of it; clean water! This pump will keep on filtering for years. You can read all about it here-

My millbank bag together with various puritabs & iodine tincture lives permanently in my day sack. I just love the simplicity of this bit of kit, its well worth the 10£ I paid for it. I also carry a survival straw, this neat bit of kit filters the water as you suck through it, blocking up when it's worn out.
Having the ability to treat your own water negates the necessity of carrying vast amounts with you. At a minimum I would need 5lts a day, carrying shed loads of water is a drag. My filter was defiantly a good buy.

With some yeah you can, neat huh! But and it's a BIG but, nastys like chemical fertilizers pesticides etc are not always removed. So its always worth looking for the cleanest "looking" water and taking it from there.
