I've got 2 border terrier crosses. They are very active dogs, long long walks off the lead every day, sniffing everything and running and chasing about. They love to chase rabbits......but they are crap at catching them (1 or 2 caught in 3 years - very poor show!). I'd love them to be able to catch rabbits and bring them back to me...any ideas?

Train them to run parallel to each other 20M apart with a long net between them.

Funny you should mention Bedlingtons....I was talking to someone on Monday who I haven't seen for years, and she's just been given one that needed some TLC. Lovely it is. But I couldn't swap my two - part of the family like. Maybe I'll look at other methods...like the dogs chasing them out of the undergrowth and me catching them.

Ahh, good idea. I know a bloke with a trawler and I'll see if he has some spare net. Trouble is, my dogs are useless and I worry they may not be able to fold the net up properly to carry it through the undergrowth....

If they are small enough to fit in the bigger holes you could use them to plant explosives in the hole and blast out the bunnies!!! :D hope this helps, it did for my dogs till one day the poor dog got stuck, needless to say all we could bury was the bell on her collar :'(
but if your dogs are smaller shouldnt eb a problem! ;)

I just don't believe this! While I was out working today, Mrs Pedroski took the dogs for a walk over the hills, and one of them came running out the undergrowth and gave her a present....a lovely young rabbit! But sadly, some old guy disposed of it for her!!!!

So you didnt try the mole bomb idea?

Pedroski
29-09-2009, 18:32
I was going to try the Mole Bomb idea, and had the gear to get the dogs rigged up proper like. But the Mrs got in a bit of a flap when she could work out which way to put the batteries in the detonator! Flamin' woman :)

Really depends on the breed of dog, I heard it said once that if most breeds of dogs were to go back to their natural wild state most breeds would starve to death very quickly because there just not designed in any way to hunt anymore. Mans selective breeding has made them co-dependent on us now.
The first staffie I had would have hunted and killed anything in sight she was a brilliant wee hunter until mr farmer shot her. And I've seen a malamute catch a deer fawn took 2 of us to drag her off, natural instincts kick in and it's kill time. Sometimes I think a lot of people forget that they have invited a carnivore to live with them lol

Terriers were bred for underground work, and used for fox and badger, their short legs make rabbiting tough work for them, however they may happen across a snoozing or lazy rabbit, and will pick them up.
You could add a whippet to the pack and use the Terriers as flushing dogs in thick bushes bramble and bracken, the whippet should do the rest for you.

Darren

most working strains of terriers are not short legged at all, and some people dont have space for more than one or two dogs so they need an alrounder hence the lurcher or whirrier (whippet x terrier) .Incidently when this litter was bred we had 4 pups and we stopped counting the phone calls after we got to 30 enquiring about a pup

JP

Ive been after a whirrier for ages, i had a coursing whippet and now have 2 lakeland terriers, years back i had a couple of lurchers whippet cross collie of the didycoys when i was a kid and then a greyhound x deer hound x greyhound x beardie in my early twenties Storm he was a lump and went like a train, but i love whippets, and a whirriers my next dog..

I think the point I was trying to make Darren, was that in comparison to a whippet and relative body dimensions, terriers are short legged. They are earth dogs, hence the name. The legs were kept short to prevent the foxes or badgers from biting the feet off the dogs when being dug

They are great hunters, but not ever really designed for rabbiting. As you may well know, terriers, and especially Borders, make superb rat dogs.

A decent Whippet will run rings around a terrier, as its what they are bred for, rabbiting. Terriers will play an important role in flushing rabbits though.
They make a good team

having once been the terrier man for the West Norfolk I am gonna disagree on leg length with you as the terriers were required to keep up with the hounds something a short legged dog in the past couldnt have done there isnt a lot of difference my biggest terrier 15" my smallest whippet 16" its more to do with twitch muscles but I am gonna keep my mouth shut now

Thanks all. I love the idea of the border x whippet. Out of my two stupid dogs, the one with the speed and who has managed to catch rabbits is the border x lakeland. He really does have long legs, and I would estimate he runs twice as fast as our other one, which is the border x JRT, with little legs but great for scrabbling through the scrub and going down hole. It would be great if they would each make the most of their assets and work together. As it is, the border X Lakeland sees something and gives chase in absolute silence, but the border X JRT then tries to catch him up while screaming her head off and frightening every other living creature away! Love them both though, so neither will do.

The border x whippet seems perfect though. If I had a whole ***** then I'd certainly be sending sausages your way right now! I know someone with a whole border ***** though, and I'll see if she might be interested

Darren, your catch there of 14 rabbits....was that all in one go?

Certainly see your point Darren, good points there as well, and as a former terrier man for a hunt, I am sure your knowledge is extensive to the point of being superior to anyone else's.:You_Rock_Emoticon:

However, the question asked was how would he could catch rabbits with his terriers. I answered that they had limitations, I wonder if you could answer it for him? It was not my intention to get drawn into a long protracted discussion about fast twitch and slow twitch fibre

Its a while since I worked with Eddie Chapman,I should have asked him last time we met.:bowler:

watched a very young beddo x whipp last week only 16 months old but his owner is ferreting mad its marking was 100% we even tried a couple of warrens it said no at and it was right, it had already learnt to stand up hill as well, it ran 2 that slipped the nets and caught both. IMO a small dog such as a whippet or more likely a whippet x because of the better coat, would be invaluable if you had to survive a few weeks out there

always liked the idea of whippet beds but then never got around to it then when I did start to look at some the only down side I could see was all the tangles in the coat thats why we ended up doing whipp border(altho the 1st litter we bred was an accident) as we knew the 1st x was only just broken coated.I see you are not to far away , if ever you fancy a bit of lamping on some different ground send me a pm

Here you go,he don't like his pic taken Though Maxines tried and tried you have to get one by accident :)

For years i used to run and work 1st cross saluki Greyhounds and had some top dogs,on the fens and small fields, but packed it all in, and terrier work about 15 year ago, as it was getting to hot

But when i remarried Maxine in 2003 thought i'd have a bit of a play again, some got 3 russles from Steve Parkin for a bit of digging and ratting, sadly a couple of years later all three managed to get into my raised koi pond one night and drowned ,it put me and Maxine off for a good while, got rid of the pond and fish as Maxine couldn't look at it any more.

Then a few years ago decided on another Dog,always fancied a Bedo Whippet, small enough to have in the house, and with you all the time, and great workers

so i started looking about, saw loads but none i could take to,after 6 months searching, finally found Briar when we met up with a bloke from up north at a service on the M1

Soon as the dog looked at me, i knew he was the one,and have never looked back, without a doubt he is the best dog and most intelligent i have ever owned,Many who have met him at meet ups will testify

Anyhoo enough of my life story heres some pics
