View Full Version : Hooped bivvy
Well i managed to get one off ebay, but it had no poles, its a phoenix phoxhole, so i looked at photos of others, then called terra nova, who sent some in two days, for £17.50.
I spent my first night out in it last night, and slept like a log, its pitch black inside, so no dawn light to wake you. I had planned on a getting up at 5ish having a brew, breakfast, then walking home in time to take the dogs out, but overlaid, had to dash home at 7 to be confronted by an angry wife, a rather noisey group of dogs(2 live in,the younger ones/workers live out), but it was worth it.
Oh yeah, forgot my torch, cut my finger quite bad, all in all a great time !.\\:D/

Ive got a phoenix (forgotton name but ends with ....lander) with an overlap at the headend. Its gortex and much lighter than an issue one. Great bit of kit, but considering modding it with a hooped head end. Cost about £25 of the bay.

My mate has just returned from the Arctic after running in an ultra event. He said I could have his bivi and it turned out to be a Terra Nova Saturn - am I a jammy git or what
I intended to take some pics, but i was late getting there, so i thought i would take them in the morning with a fire and billy on the boil, to give it that Ray Mears ambience !, but was running late, so did'nt have time.
The upside though, is its only a 15 minute walk across the fields from where i live, so now i'm all set, i should get out again mid week, and get some pics this time.
You got a great deal there :) I had an American Ecotat about three years ago, but found it a bit 'snug' and flogged it; wish I'd kept it now:(
Just modded mine.
Piece of wire through the overlap, and extra material sewn in to make the shape and add protection from elements. It will be used with a tarp most of the time though.

Its got a centre zip already in for entry, but may make it longer, then again it seems ok at the mo.
The wire will be taken out and slid down the inside of the rucksack.
A tag has been sewn on with cord attached to pull out the shape a bit, over a stick.
Need to get some mesh to finish it off now, to stop the midges ect.

The reversable rucksack cover used for the material, was a tad bright on the back so might calm that down a bit :)
The boy could modify anything!
I've got some buckshee fibreglass poles with the bungee if you can use them at all. No idea if they'll bend enough though.
Looks a good alternative. :)

Thought i'd stop modding stuff, then this thread popped up. Plus I was blomin cold last weekend in the hammock.
Could give ya poleage a go. Tryed a thin fibreglass pole from a fishing shelter and it wouldn't bend very well.
