This weekend just gone a couple of the guys form the SWB and myself went for a 2 night 2 day canoe camping trip down the Wye Valley.

Nice to re vist alot of the places i grew up around and get out for my first paddle on moving water. We started about halfway between Glasbury and Hay at the Holybush inn after a night spent listening the the peacocks that roost there (the urge to catch and eat them was coaked out of me) a fire roast venison and the unresitable few swift one in the pub. Fist leg finished at Bycross some 20 odd miles down the river. Getting used to paddling tandem and with a novice took its toll early on resulting in a nose to the bank in a fast water channel, soon broadside and sooner in the ogin. It was brass monkey cold, a quick ring out of kit on the island and off again. Second day after a night of campfire food and beer the clocks going forward caught us out. We finally got on the water at 1200 after eating enough sausage, bacon and brews to feed a company. First corner was Monnington falls all be it with not much water over but still exceiting fora flat water paddler like me. A stop for lunch at the Weir gardens a national trust owed property and ornamental gardens. Onward to finish at Hereford rowing club.

Well ........

A very nice chap who we were talking to at the Midlands meet, another canoeing enthusiast :) Said that a certain stretch of water could catch you out. How right he was :lmao:

Actually I shouldn't laugh really cos I'm a wuss. You wouldn't get me in fast water nooooo way. If it's not a mill pond my feet stay on terra firma

How could you leave out the two highlights of the trip?

1. Getting chatted / touched up by Shreks not so good looking sister in the Holybush (still makes me shudder just thinking about it)

2. The fantastic Yew Tree Inn at Preston-on-Wye - a country mile from the campsite but well worth the walk. Only four things on the price list - Bitter, Lager,Smoothflow and Cider (all at £250). And theres only one of each so no difficult choices to make. For any CAMRA types, if you dont like the bitter hang on for a while - cause he only has one barrel of whatevers on, and when that runs out its all change.

Cheers

I've done this section in summer with my club, and both the sites we used get very busy during summer weekends. If you want to run this section during the summer your better off doing it midweek.

And what guarantee is that then? This is the UK you know

I'm thinking that June might be best, before the kids break up from school. That is, if the kids school holidays make it more busier when its busy :-? Yep I'm confused too but, I have been on the wine :lmao:
