Started with a canoe and bushcraft just seems to be part of that life or vise versa. Paddled Loch Ken last June and had a grand time -that's where my username comes from. The Red Kites over Ken are just amazing but not very good for canoe navigation 'specially when you're looking at them through binos and not where you're going. Thank goodness for the reed beds! Even caught a Pike but Toby, our dog, had other ideas - the divil got excited and tripped me up just I was about pick the beastie up in the shallows. Needless to say I got wet, Toby got an earful and Ian Lavender got away. Arghhh .
It's a great place and often much less busy than other Scottish Lochs. Some of you dandy Southerners don't reckon you're in Scotland 'til Inverness is in your rear view mirror :icon_tong. Anybody fancies a paddle up this way come the summer, let me know. Not that I'm a fairweather paddler, it's just that Baby Kite will be a wee bit older then and I should be able to 'escape' for a few nights. Here's me boat, Mirrormere at Coniston last March:

I like to mix bushcrafting and canoeing. I've done loads of overnighters and a week long trip in Sweden. Always up for more:banana:

I know the rules in Scotland are different, and thus far almost all my caneoing has been in sweden (except a small trip to the lakes) so the question I have is what are the rules for caneoing in the England??
I'd love to do over nighters here but gaining water and land access must be a nightmare :o

You are allowed on tidal stretches and certain permitted rivers and canals Gary..
I would love to be as skilled as this guy in a canoe. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=87_qBovy9ag
This is one of my favourite youtube clips.. Great sound track too..

I like the idea of going out in a canoe, trouble is i'd sh1t myself :o
Im fine fishing and being near the edge of water, even going in knee deep,
to actually go out on the water though puts the wind up me!!!!
It all looks really good fun though, and i like the look of fishing from a canoe,
looks a laugh. There was that other post someone put on here, think it was a birthday paddle, that looked a laugh as well, if a bit cold!
Good thread and pix though

We have an open canoe for bimbling round the estuaries and occasional trips away. Its an Old Town Scout - 16' with about 1000lb+ payload, so can carry loadsa gear.
http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp226/intertidal/P8250083.jpg
However, my weapon of choice for coastal trips and shoreline scavenging is the sea kayak - I've had this boat since 1989:
http://i414.photobucket.com/albums/pp226/intertidal/PA181730.jpg
I've done several trips of a week or more in this boat, carrying everything needed on board - the best value for money of any boat I've ever owned.

Cheers, Michael.

I love coastal paddling ware I am I have access to at least four(4) tidal estuaries covering some 350miles of coastline, lucky me, but I also like to paddle rivers/canals, not much in the way of lakes where I am, but we can't have it all .

Hello Wayne.. :) Long time no speak.. How you doing..?
Hi Jon.
I don't frequent the forums as much as I used to.
I am getting ready for a Canoe bushcraft trip to the Nahanni in the NWT Canada. Life is pretty hectic.

Sounds exciting.. Have a good one mate, and please copy a report of your adventure on here. There are a few of us into canoes. :)
I too have an open canoe. An Old Town Charles River. I really love getting out in it and hopefully in the next few weeks I'll finally get canoe camping..
Hi Mr Scrivvy
I'm Stewart over here - saves trying to remember different user names, and at my age thats getting harder.
Still canoeing along, and if anyone fancies a trip sometime just post up and we'll see what we can get sorted.

I think the two go hand in hand I love the slow relaxed pace of life open canoeing offers that and the increased beverage! ER I mean equipment capacity it allows.
I have just got a Charles river only been out a few times but planning more ventures very soon.

It's a good little boat Will, perfect for what I need anyway. Loads of room when you're used to carrying everything on your back.
Mrs Shewie has started to take an interest now though so I'm gonna be getting a second boat in spring I think.
canoes are awesome, i have one i use and its a great help. They are best for getting into swamps were your boat cant go, to find that fishing spot. Also too canoeing is soooo much easier then walking lol

I got interested in canoes and bought my first one last year. I found a link to a bushcraft forum and got into it then. I totally agree that one goes hand in hand with the other.
Both are great fun.
