View Full Version : Winter projects?
ive got wood in my freezer that im going to do some spoons with, yew spindle and hornbeam, and lots of lime bark im going to do some cordage with, im going to do a load of ferreting over christmas too.
Got 3 spoons on the go..the latest is a piece of Red Oak (Quercus Rubra) I cut last Saturday. There's also a Lauri PT blade which has been in the drawer for 18 months which needs a handle. Christmas has two days shooting/beating planned....
No real projects for me really, winter is always very busy (non bushcrafty related work:rolleyes:), so I just go on short foraging bimbles or come on here to get my bushcraft fix .
You lot should never under estimate how much pleasure I (and I bet others) get from reading your tales and projects, especially cos I don't get chance during winter very do much!

If you get chance/ time could you give a quick lime bark cordage tutorial?
I have a few projects on the go that haven't been touched in a long time. A few blades need doing and the belt that Eric sent me ages ago still needs doing, which is quite embaressing! I'm thinking of going for the style that Dec posted yesterday, it looks infinitely adjustable and less to go wrong, so ideal for a cack handed chimp like myself!

Boat will be taken out of the water before Xmas and laid up till Easter, so plenty to be getting on with there. Need to either make or buy a few new crab and prawn pots for next year. Also need to strip down and service a whole load of fishing reels, cast some leads, make some sets of mackeral feathers, new handle for prawn net........
Hang on, I think I need a lie down!
But mostly, I shall be keeping an eye on the weather and conditions in the hills, ready to head off north for some winter climbing .

Hhm, wood in the freezer? Not heard of that before. I presume it's to stop it drying out.
Do you not have problems with the moisture expanding and cracking it?
We used to just leave the wood in a big bowl of water.
Yes keeps it green which is a bonus with very hard woods like Yew and Hornbeam, always done it nevere ever had a problem, also i have a lot of blanks in there which would be a pain in a big bowl of water, plus i would think it would only be a matter of time before the wood started to break down in the water, it doesnt in the freezer.

Got a few odds and ends that need tying up.
Have a few selfbow-blanks lying around i want to have a go at. 1 as a wide-bow like the old danish one found in the danish bogs. (Ulmus.)
A few blades have been lying around for ages. That needs some attention aswell.
And i am on a lookout for a halfway descent place to live.....
A few days beating, and shooting.
And quite a few foxes in the freezer needs skinning and tanning.
I guess my wintertime is pretty much filled out.
Yes that reminds me...........I have a Fallow deer skin in the freezer waiting for a good scrapeing. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a good Chianti.............sorry I could not resist the last bit, it was Guinness actually.
