I've just read this on another forum i go to, I thought it wise to post it as is written there here, as i know there's a few dog owners on here,

My Dad's mate (a solicitor who works from home and a very keen game shooter) has just phoned, close to tears

He has two young gundogs a 3 year old cocker and a Lab of about 18 months. He has a paper shredder in his office for important documents that he has on the floor next to his desk-the young labrador has just put her tongue in the shredder and the end 3" of her tongue got shredded while he went to make a cup of tea

He's with her at the vets now so I don't know what will happen treatment wise yet.

The point is, if you do have one of these things, please don't leave it on the 'auto' setting, and only turn it on when you want to use it. We have one of these shredders and used to leave it on auto setting all the time, not anymore!

How dreadful! I hate our paper shredder being left plugged in even if it's switched to "off", I always think of childrens' fingers being put into it but never thought of the dog with it before! I'll definately be checking it's left unplugged now ... poor hound :(

ouch!!!!
We don't have a dog, but a deaf (and daft) cat who is prone to mess about with stuff, so I'm always careful to turn the shredder off at the socket.
As an aside, we've now got a power consumption meter that monitors our power usage. The upshot is that I've become pretty anal about turning lots of things off - makes a big difference!

Very sad, my elder brother, when he was 2yrs of age, walked in front of my sister who was on a swing, the swing hit him in the face almost chopping off his tongue, the hospital done an amazing job of sewing it back on.

He has a scar the full width of his tongue but no complaints from his wife.

We just kept a dog for the weekend (and have done so many times) where the dog slept in the kitchen where theres a paper shredder on the floor. Thanks for the heads up, I'll move it when they come to stay.

More importantly, they should be kept away from kids.
The majority of injuries with paper shredders happen to kids under the age of 5, resulting in amputated fingers.
