My dad and I went to a new spot for the Massachusetts spring gobbler season. We crossed a couple of fields and then set up on a hedgerow between two fields.

It was around 5:00 AM or so and we heard three gobbles. I set up our decoy and dad set up the blind. We sat up against a dead pine stump and waited. I heard a gobble behind us and I let out some yelps on the diagphram. I got a response.

Soon I could see a big blue head bobbing in the pasture as it came our way. I raised my shotgun and waited for him to come through a small opening . He was about 30 yards away and I squeezed the trigger. The 3 1/2" mag shell took him out with one shot. I ran to get my prize. A nice big bodied gobbler.

We sat for another hour and managed to call in a bigger bird in the same pasture. But then a hen crossed in front of us and he didn't come any further. It seemed that he hung up around 45 yards or so. When that hen crossed he sort of went backwards and then retraced his steps to the middle of the pasture. He was strutting and drumming to beat the band.

Later, another hen crossed the pasture and by 8:00 it was pretty much all done.

It was a shame that the second bird didn't come about 10 feet closer. I don't like to wound such a majestic bird. The bird I took was done fairly and in an honorable fashion. I thanked God for the gift of this bird and my dad and I went home.

It was a great day.
