This is quick video demo of a simple and reliable way of making fire with a firesteel, the birch bark is impregnated with flammable oils and it doesn't take much to make it go up:

Excelent stuff birch bark, well done scotty. The ferro rod is with out a doubt is the no1 survival aid, i found one in ashdown forest that had been outside for over a year if not longer, it had oxidised and disintigrated partly, the striker was rusted and the plastic had been chewed on by rodents still works perfectly, we use it in the fire lighting demo on courses to show how reliable and bomb proof they are.
That's good stuff scott,:)
i have to agree with you there J.P i think it's the only thing i always have on me, and i have a few of, coats car bergen
Nice one Scotty....decided one time in the rain to try it with every fallen birch I found....it worked :)
