I'm after some new boots. I'm thinking along these lines

brashe fellmaster (http://www.cccoutdoors.com/products.asp?recid=4709)

pros
*good open sole for mud
*waterproof
*price
*wont need so much breaking in

cons
*nasty colour but that will fade
*heard mixed things about brasher

berghaus explorer 4 (http://www.blacks.co.uk/blacks.storefront/EN/Product/08190943(Black41))

pros
*nice looking
*good support
*wont need so much breaking in

cons
*soles will clog more then brasher
*cost ?20 more
*again mixed reviews

I'm hoping to try on some
Pro XT army boot (http://www.whipperleys.co.uk/acatalog/web_tex_waterproof_boots.html)

pros
*should be hard wearing
*easy to care for
*can be used for St Johns Duty

cons
*long time to break in
*heavy
*may not be comfatable if I don't use them day in day out

Veggi that might be worth asking over on outdoors-magazine forums they seem to be alot more knowledgable about that sort of stuff :)

I bought the basher boots in the end. I decided I don't use them enough to bed in army boots and they are very heavy. The berghaus boots looked like they wouildn't handle the mud so well.

I have worked for quite few years as an outdoor ed instructor so i have fairly good idea about this kinda thing
The Brashers are desigend for specific purpose in mind. Yes they are supremely light and do not take long to break becuase they have much thinner leather and therefore are not as resitant to scrapes and bumps etc. they have a particularly weird fitting heel some people comment about too. If yoru a dogwalker/rambler go by them if you are intending to go or path into rough terrain personally I would say look again. Brands I would look at are the Hanwags as mentioned above, anything by Raichle, Kayland, Scarpa, La sportiva, Lowa or Meindl
There are loads more outthere tooany good outdoor shop can help out . Personally I have Raichle for winter ( when crampons required ) La Sportiva for scrambling and most stuff and a pair of Berghaus that live in the boot of the car.
I assume everybody knows that putting Gore tex inside leather bots is kinda redunant and will make you feet swaet more . LEather is more breathable then membranes and looked after properly waterproof.
LAST POINT ITS ALL ABOUT YOUR FEET ARE DIFFERENT TO EVERYBODY ELSES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
