Some time back I posted about a pack I put together for my two girls (2 & 5 at the time) and their 4H friends.

http://www.bushcraftliving.com/forums/showthread.php?t=748

While it may be too basic, the idea is to have it when out hiking and camping. My girls do take it when they go. I don't even have to bug them, they ask for it.

Proud papa moment.

Anyway, one of the things that is in their packs is a safety booklet with checklists of things they need to do and we (parents) need to do each time before going out.

I never posted it before because I felt it is just a crude tool for the kids. But the moms liked it and my wife has been bugging, er, encouraging me to post it to get feedback on it.

While 12 pages may seem like a lot, realistically, only the back cover would be looked at in a "survival" situation. The rest is preparation. And the 12 pages is printed on 3 8 1/2 x 11 pages, front and back, laminated, folded and tied together (emergency cordage and tinder.

Anyway, here is the booklet I made for the kids. Feedback away. No worries about sparing my feelings. It is all constructive to me. The backgrounds are all white but they show up grey in the pictures for some reason.

Cracking mate :) id reiliterate the 3 whistle blasts with a 1 min gap and also to stay still, we run a family course and make this a game 2 kids go with a parent and blast the distress signal, and as soon as they hear 6 blasts back they stay still and keep blasting till the others find them then they swap over. to be over looked with rescue so close is so so sad:frown:,
I like what you have done and commend you for teaching your youngsters wilderness safety, they could save someones life one day with what you have taught them, well done mate

Thanks guys. Before any of them were given their backpacks, we had a two hour "class" on the stuff inside with the parents.

I had one of everything open to practice with so that the kit in the packs could stay pristine. So we went over it all including the booklet and I got the parents to buy in on doing the checklists too. Then the opened stuff made their round to each home for more play time so that they could experience using it.

My hope is none of the kids will ever need it.

Thanks guys. I am glad you liked it.

But somehow, I don't feel worthy. It was just something pieced together for the kids.

Very good. Very well put together, and easy to understand.
Like the way you get the parents involved in it aswell.

You sir, deserve respect for this contribution. No doubt about that .)

That's a great item for youngsters, simple, to the point, and with the pictures of the stuff in the kit makes it easy to understand, interesting and fun with a serious note. Well done, a good bit of thinking here.

Thanks guys for your comments.

Bushman 045, if you will PM your email address to me, I will look for the file and put it in pdf for you.

I would suggest you put your children's pictures and parent contact info on it and laminate it. I laminated ours so that it will likely survive rain and sticky fingers.

I could make it available as a PDF in the downloads area for people to download at will if you would like hanzo?

Should I send it to you as a pdf? Then I can get rid of the dark background.

Fantastic, mate im gonna give this to my kids...

You could put in "Stay put if your lost"

& "Don't feed/touch wildlife" e.g. snakes/ spiders/ mountain lions.

I also have a secret phase e.g. carols dog has a blue collar, if the SAR teams shout this my kids wont hide, I teach them not to talk to strangers..

They hear this and they know the strangers have been sent by us and they are safe.

Most kids think they are gonna be in trouble for getting lost,..

Im not knocking you, you book is great, just think this may be able to make it a little better.

as a father too its great to have these little info memoires as it were for young people it can also encourage parents to be a little more aware on things.

i think a little dirt time is good for young people too their attention to picking up things is sometimes far greater than us adults so getting them to track themselves is a great little activity and marking the trail with arrows marked on the ground etc you just make up your own is fun too pucker
