After a fire has gone out it is possible to relight the partly burned sticks left over. By taking a spare or flame to the fire dog it will start to glow, now push it against another fire dog and blow so the ember will spread. When you have a few alight blow into flame and take your kindling and build the fire up again.

It is sometimes possible to relight a fire dog months after the fire went out, provided it is dry.
